Task Based Instruction
Task based instruction offers an alternative for language teachers. In a
task-based lesson the teacher doesn't pre-determine what language will
be studied, the lesson is based around the completion of a central task
and the language studied is determined by what happens as the students
complete it. The lesson follows certain stages.
This approach is one of the main known through the history
for
the
language teachers.
Students interact of a practical
and proactive way that means they look for the information to practice the target language. Both, teacher and students, play up an
important role in the learning process while teachers are
one
guide in the learning, the students are
the protagonist of their own interaction
using the language.
Task
based instruction is often justified by
the
claim that linguistic regularities are
acquired through ‘noticing’ during communicative activity, and should therefore
be addressed primarily by incidental ‘focus on form’ during task performance. However,
this
claim is based on unproved hypotheses, and there is no
compelling empirical evidence for the validity
of the model.
Teachers who apply this method in their classes need to use good vocabulary for the students to perform the task and understand it. It means that students can feel comfortable with the task they
are
doing in order to create an environment where they show
their skills by putting in practice the skills acquired. The teacher should be careful in selecting the right materials to facilitate the teaching-learning process. This approach
can
be a good option to use in classroom for those teachers who seek
for developing
competencies in their students.
